MIND
Two workshops, by local and international
experts, on the fundamentals of usability design and
evaluation. Hosted by The Interaction Design Group,
Department of Information Systems, The University
of Melbourne, Parkville.
Audience: The two
workshops are intended for people involved in user interface
design. The workshops are not intended for usability
specialists or people who have completed coursework
study in human computer interaction or interaction design
Day 1 - 11
Nov 2003, 9am-5pm
Cognitive Factors in Design: Basic
Human Memory and Problem Solving
- Conducted by:
- Thomas T Hewett (Drexel University, USA &
visiting Professor, Creativity and Cognition Research
Studios, Faculty of IT, University of Technology
Sydney)
Overview
You will learn some theoretical
and practical aspects of how people remember information
and how they solve problems. You will gain insights
about how to take advantage of some of these capabilities
in designing for your most important interaction component,
the human mind. The course is not intended for the
person seeking "instant" or pre-packaged solutions.
Features
- Understanding a variety of phenomena
through "minds on" exposure
- Develop a basis for making educated
design choices when guidelines fail
- Relate some cognitive phenomena
to human computer interaction
- Gain the resources needed for
self-directed study in cognitive psychology
Day 2 - 12

"Usability Evaluation: An Introduction
to What, Why and How to"
- Conducted by:
- Sandrine Balbo, Steve Goschnick, Steve Howard,
Frank Vetere (The University of Melbourne) & John
Murphy (Novell)
Overview
You will be introduced to the most
common approaches to usability evaluation (including
expert based and user based approaches). You will understand
the various roles usability evaluation plays in ICT
development, and also how to plan and conduct basic
evaluations The course will assume no previous knowledge
of usability evaluation, though some personal experience
of user interface design would be advantageous
Features
- Gain a basic understanding
of usability and its evaluation
- Develop a test and evaluation plan
- Develop skills in expert and user
based approaches to evaluation
- Use a state of the art usability
laboratory
- Gain insight into more advanced
issues in usability evaluation
